Foundation

 

In Foundation year, students use a variety of different resources, hands-on learning activities and developmental play as they work towards reaching the achievement standards outlined in the Australian Curriculum.  

 

English

 

Students begin the year by learning their ABC’s and work towards completing other tasks such as:

 

  • share weekly news with their peers
  • explore different text types
  • read high-frequency words
  • develop beginning writing skills
  • form upper- and lower-case letters
  • correctly use capital letters and full stops

 

They also take readers and sight words home daily to be completed at their own pace.

 

Mathematics

 

Using a variety of resources including Maths Plus and the ACE’s Math PACES, games and hands-on learning activities, students work towards understanding the following mathematical concepts:

 

  • making connections between number names, words and quantities
  • counting forwards and backwards, beginning at different points
  • copy, continue and create patterns
  • sort and classify familiar objects
  • identify and sort basic 2-D and 3-D shapes
  • compare objects using length, mass and capacity
  • solve simple addition and subtraction equations
  • connect days of the week to familiar events
  • use appropriate language to describe location

Students also participate in the following extra-curricular activities:

 

  • End of term excursions (previous locations include Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, Mulligrubs, etc.)
  • Visit from the School Crossing Lady
  • Friday Fun afternoons
  • Cooking
  • Swimming Sports & Swimming Program
  • Mother/Father’s Day stalls
  • School Buddy program
  • Inter-school Tabloid Games
